American Culture

I am from Albania, an eastern european country. I came to America in 1996, I was 8 at the time and very young to understand culture. As I got older, I started to notice things. Going back and forth to my country, I saw that there were many differences between America and Albania. One of them was the way people dressed. Over here people are laid back when it comes to fashion and the way they look. They are very simple and dont really care about what other people think of them. As back home people really expand the term "dress to impress". They always have to look good even if they are just going to buy bread at the corner store. They follow up on the latest fashion trends, so they wont miss out or feel weird around their peers. They always like to stand out, it's like a competition in a runway show, everyone is trying to look better than the next person. Everytime I go back for vacation, I have people looking at me like I am a tourist, even though I am from there. My friends tell me I have become more American.

  1. When I go to my country, I got same felling as you. Yes, you are right people dress very nice. And my friend asks to me, why you dress like this? So, my answer is “this is America style”. Every country has they are own style and culture. When you live in this country, you will follow style day by day change.

  2. I find a huge difference in which part of States you’re in. In the South if you dress well, or even wear clothes that fit people will stare at you. They really seem confused if dress stylish at all. You will get borated by questions like "what you dressed like that fur?" or "You got some big date night lookin' all sharp like that?"

  3. I find that interesting because I find that in certain areas in NY this culture of dressing to impress does exist, it just depends where in NY you are. There are certain areas that people do dress like they just got out of bed but other areas, everyone is dressed extremely well. Additionally, I think it is different for women in NY because I think there is a subconscious need for women to dress better than the woman next to her. But I do notice that in most European countries the men dress much more elaborately than the men in the US.
